What NOT to Feed Your Dog

  • Avocado – Flesh contains persin which affects breathing, stones cause gastro-intestinal blockage (as do stone fruit seeds and corn on the cob)

  • Alcohol and illicit drugs

  • Cat Food – High in fat

  • Dairy Products – Usually milk due to lactose intolerance, small amounts of yogurt may be beneficial

  • ·Grapes, raisins, sultanas – cause kidney disease

  • Green Tomatoes, potatoes and rhubarb – All toxic

  • Onions and Garlic – Cause haemolytic anaemia, although very small amounts of garlic can be beneficial

  • Macadamia nuts – Causes neurological tremors

  • Chocolate – Contains theobromide which is highly toxic, especially dark and cooking

  • Liver – High Quantities cause vitamin A toxaemia

  • Hops – Cause hypothermia

  • Human Vitamins – Especially iron supplements

  • Human Medications – eg. Neurophen is highly toxic to the liver

  • Cooked Bones – Splinter and lodge in the roof of the mouth or oesophagus, cause constipation as they cannot be digested.

  • Large bones can cause tooth fractures

  • Apple Seeds – The pips contain Cyanide

  • Potentially Nuts -  Just like us, dogs can develop nut allergies
