Frequently Asked Questions

  • This workshop will run over two days.

Four dogs are invited each day, with them and their owners able to participate in the practical elements of the workshop.

There are limited spots over the weekend for observers to watch and learn from the workshop.

  • This workshop is suitable to dogs that are reactive towards other dogs.

  • Dogs that are reactive to people are not suitable for this workshop.

  • A session involves:

    • Setting up a Freework environment (“stations”) tailored to the dog

    • Allowing the dog to explore freely

    • Observing posture, movement, breathing, and behaviour

    • Video analysis after the session to identify patterns or concerns

Each session is unique because every dog is unique.

  • Video allows for slow-motion and detailed analysis that isn’t always visible in real time. It helps identify:

    • Muscular or skeletal imbalances

    • Asymmetry or movement restrictions

    • Signs of discomfort or pain

    • Nervous system responses

This information guides next steps and referrals if needed.

  • It’s highly unlikely.

Typically reactivity cases take time, consistency and ongoing adaptions to the training plan.

This workshop will give you an understanding of your dogs reactivity and the tools you need to create your training plan, implement it and adapt it as you progress.

  • No referral is needed. However, we work collaboratively with veterinarians and allied professionals when appropriate.

  • Yes. If your puppy is already reactive, addressing this as early as possible is important.

  • Absolutely. Some dogs have been practicing reactivity for a long time and can still be helped whereas others may have only started their reactive behaviours later in life.

Teaching old dogs new tricks brings different challenges but is achievable.

  • If you are open to understanding why your dog behaves the way they do — rather than simply stopping behaviours — then yes, this approach is for you.

  • Potentially.

It depends on what you have been doing to address the reactivity so far.

Even a training plan with all the best intentions can be making no difference or even making it worse if it is not addressing the route cause of the reactivity.

  • Yes.

Both Dom & Ian offer individual training programs and other services.

Meet Ian Shivers

As well as co-founding Canine Caregivers with Dom, Ian also owns and operates Bondi Behaviourist, working in person with people and their dogs across Sydney, helping with all manner of training and behavioural matters.

Ian's approach is founded in an understanding that the physical, emotional and mental health of our dogs is at the core of their behaviour. That the relationship between people and their dogs must be built on trust, a sense of safety and support.

For people and their dogs to live their best lives together we must recognise and meet the needs of both ends of the leash.

Ian has worked with dogs since 2007, he
has studied Behaviour Analysis under Dr Susan Friedman, completed the L.E.G.S.® Applied Ethology Family Dog Mediation® Professional Course with Kim Brophey and has a diploma in dog behaviour through the British College of Canine Studies. Ian believes that we are always learning through formal study, experience and from others and so is constantly expanding on his experience having developed strong working relationships with trainers, veterinary behaviourists and veterinary practices internationally.
