As well as co-founding Canine Caregivers with Dom, Ian also owns and operates Bondi Behaviourist, working in person with people and their dogs across Sydney, helping with all manner of training and behavioural matters.

Ian's approach is founded in an understanding that the physical, emotional and mental health of our dogs is at the core of their behaviour. That the relationship between people and their dogs must be built on trust, a sense of safety and support.

For people and their dogs to live their best lives together we must recognise and meet the needs of both ends of the leash.

Ian has worked with dogs since 2007, he has studied Behaviour Analysis under Dr Susan Friedman, completed the L.E.G.S.® Applied Ethology Family Dog Mediation® Professional Course with Kim Brophey and has a diploma in dog behaviour through the British College of Canine Studies.

Ian believes that we are always learning through formal study, experience and from others and so is constantly expanding on his experience having developed strong working relationships with trainers, veterinary behaviourists and veterinary practices internationally.

Frequently Asked Questions on Reactive Dog Classes Sydney

  • What is a Reactive Dog Workshop?

This workshop will run over two days.

Four dogs are invited each day, with them and their owners able to participate in the practical elements of the workshop.

There are limited spots over the weekend for observers to watch and learn from the workshop.

  • What kinds of reactivity is this workshop suitable for?

This workshop is suitable to dogs that are reactive towards other dogs.

  • What dogs are not suitable to this workshop?

Dogs that are reactive to people are not suitable for this workshop.

  • What does the workshop look like?

    A session involves:

Setting up a safe environment where each dog is fenced (and leashed if appropriate) and cannot see the other dog there that day.

Enrichment will be provided to help the dog settle.

As the dogs settle, we then begin learning about the dogs here with us this day and the 'observers' dogs.

    We then unpack reactivity theory.

We introduce practical elements and skills.

We allow for rest and recovery.

    We unpack more theory.

    We teach practical skills.

We have three breaks strategically placed in the day to allow for everyone to get a breather including the dogs.

    We repeat on day two.

  • Why do you video the session?

The workshop will be recorded and the material will be used for educational purposes in the Canine Caregivers platform.

  • Will my dogs reactivity be fixed in this weekend?

    It’s highly unlikely.

Typically reactivity cases take time, consistency and ongoing adaptions to the training plan.

This workshop will give you an understanding of your dogs reactivity and the tools you need to create your training plan, implement it and adapt it as you progress.

  • Do I need a referral from my vet?

No referral is needed. However, we work collaboratively with veterinarians and allied professionals when appropriate.

  • Do you work with puppies?

Yes. If your puppy is already reactive, addressing this as early as possible is important and we are happy to have you with us.

  • Do you work with senior dogs?

Absolutely. Some dogs have been practicing reactivity for a long time and can still be helped whereas others may have only started their reactive behaviours later in life.

Teaching old dogs new tricks brings different challenges but is achievable.

  • Is this right for me if I just want my dog to behave better?

If you are open to understanding why your dog behaves the way they do — rather than simply stopping behaviours — then yes, this approach is for you.

  • Do I need to stop training the way I currently do?

    Potentially.

It depends on what you have been doing to address the reactivity so far.

Even a training plan with all the best intentions can be making no difference or even making it worse if it is not addressing the route cause of the reactivity.

  • Do you offer training or mentorship beyond this workshop?

    Yes.

Both Dom & Ian offer individual training programs and other services.

How We Get Results that Last

We Set Solid Foundations

We emphasise behavioural health with a focus on meeting the dogs fundamental needs. Once these are met we have a dog that is in the best fram of mind for learning.

We Know It’s about Relationships

Communication between people and their dogs is about relationships and healthy relationships are based on trust, clarity, kindness and feeling safe in each others company.

Address the Actual Issue

Getting to the bottom of what is actually causing issues and resolving it there is the key to long lasting results and supporting both the dog and the person.
